Why your logo has a background in the first place

Most logos start life as vector files with no background at all. The box appears the moment someone exports or forwards the logo as a JPG — a format with no alpha channel, so every “empty” pixel gets filled with a solid colour. The same happens with screenshots from a website and scans of printed letterhead. By the time the file reaches you, the background is baked into the pixels and no format conversion can undo it.

That is why renaming the file to .png changes nothing: the background has to be detected and removed pixel by pixel. Will the transparent logo work on a dark background?
The PNG itself will — transparency composites onto any colour. Whether it looks right depends on the logo: dark lettering disappears on dark backgrounds regardless of transparency. If the logo has a light or 'knockout' variant, remove the background from that version for dark surfaces.
Does removing the background reduce my logo's quality?
No. The output PNG keeps the original resolution, and PNG compression is lossless — only the background pixels are changed to transparent. That said, the tool cannot add detail that isn't there: a tiny 200-pixel logo stays a tiny logo. Start from the largest version you have.
